Another year of high school sports is in the books and the summer schedule is nearing full swing. I’m looking for events to cover and stories to write, and I would love to hear your recommendations.
The Medal Stand: Seeking summer event input
With the last of high school sports state tournaments behind us and June nearly here, it is time to shift gears.
Summer is when I try to make it to as many community events as I can. In the past, I’ve covered triathlons, criteriums and road races. Some events, like the annual To Bone and Back ultramarathon and relay, I’ve always circled on my calendar. More recently, I’ve enjoyed covering the youth track programs which started two years ago in Rexburg by Doug Stutz and expanded with the creation of Idaho Falls’ High Five Flyers program last summer.
That being said, I’m putting together a master schedule of eastern Idaho events taking place this summer and would appreciate your help adding to the list. What events should I cover? Is there an athlete or organization I should know about? If you have any suggestions, please contact me at 542-6772 or at mhereford@postregister.com.
Coming up locally
The seventh annual Redfish Lake Lodge Memorial Run half marathon, 10k and 5k takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday in Stanley. The courses for the half marathon and 10k have changed this year.
Team USA Updates
The annual Pre Classic begins Friday and continues through Saturday at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. Among the athletes registered for the meet, which is part of the Diamond League, are Mo Farah (5,000 meters), Paul Chelimo (5,000 meters), Justin Gatlin (100), Andre de Grasse (100), LaShawn Merritt (400), Dawn Harper Nelson (100 hurdles) and a loaded women’s 200 finals with Allyson Felix, Elaine Thompson, Tori Bowie, Shaunae Miller and Dafne Schippers. Friday will also include events in tribute to Joan Benoit Samuelson, a Maine native and winner of the inaugural Olympic women’s marathon at Los Angeles 1984.
Per gamesbids.com, the International Olympic Committee will meet June 9 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to further discuss possibly naming the hosts for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympic Games simultaneously. As of now, the IOC is scheduled to vote on the 2024 Summer Olympics host on September 13 at a meeting in Lima, Peru. Los Angeles and Paris are the only 2024 candidates remaining following the withdrawal of Budapest in March.
